Crayons can be humbling

IMG_6160McKinley & crayons!

I’m ecstatic that McKinley is starting to color. I’m an artsy gal- so I’ve been strongly looking forward to sharing that passion with her. The minute I gave her the crayons her whole being lit up with joy. It was humbling to see.

How to: First Birthday Party

Planning can be overwhelming.  Who do you invite? How long should the party last? The cake, the invitations, the theme…oh and scheduling around snacks and naps… exhale.

The first birthday is special.  Granted, it’s not like they will remember it or anything, but it’s still special.  A right of passage for both the parents and baby.  “Veteran” parents.

Helpful questions and Tips for planning:

1. How many people do you need to invite?  Is that number Small or big?

2. Party at home or renting a place?

3. Choose a day & time. (Usually afternoon before or after nap and I would not make party longer than 90 minutes).

4. Theme. Pick theme after a favorite book or toy.

5. Invitations. (homemade or buy?) – Check out photos below for a “how to” invitations.

5. Supplies: Snacks, plates, napkins, plasticware, cups, decorations.

6. The cake.

7. The party:

  • Friends & family gathered around playing with birthday girl/boy
  • Cake & photos
  • opening gifts
  • playing with gifts and more visiting

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate covered strawberries…how can you go wrong?

  • Fresh organic Strawberries (and bananas too!)
  • Dark chocolate (high percent of cocoa) – the higher the better for you!
  • pots (one the slightly fits inside the other)
  • spoon to stir!

Step1: Get out ingredients, put a pot of water on stove- turn to medium high heat, then place a smaller pot inside so that it rests on the water. (See photo below)

Step 2: Pour in the dark chocolate chunks and constantly mix/stir until you get melted smooth chocolate: (see photo progression below)

Step 3: Have one person be the content mixer, while another person dips in the strawberries or bananas! You must constantly stir otherwise the chocolate can harden!

Step 4: Set chocolate covered yummies aside in fridge to harden!

A Human Experience

This morning was peaceful. Grandpa pulled out the ole guitar. And it’s been awhile since he’s done that.  He even said,

“I’ve just had an urge for pickin’.”

Then my mother jumped in with her banjo.  and in seconds we were singing, She’ll be comin’ round the mountain. An awing moment.

My parents are baby-boomin’-spirit filled-passionate-opinionated-intellectual seeking-hippies.  So naturally, of course, music is this omnipotent presence to them. And, I agree.

Music is a powerful instrument.

A form of expression.

Inspiring. Spiritual. Hypnotizing. Adventurous.

Music means various things to people and is utilized differently.

Music connects us together. A passion shared across race and culture.

A human experience.
